We understand that giving birth and adjusting to life with a newborn can be overwhelming. That’s why we provide guidance and support in a way that feels safe, respectful and tailored to your needs.

What is maternity care (kraamzorg)?

Kraamzorg is a unique part of the Dutch healthcare system. After your baby is born, a maternity nurse – the kraamverzorgende – will visit your home daily to support you during the first week.

We check your recovery, your baby’s health, help with feeding (breast or bottle), explain baby care, and answer all your questions. Our goal is to give you and your family the best possible start, both physically and emotionally.

Practical information

How many hours of care will I receive?

The number of hours of kraamzorg you receive depends on your family situation and needs. During an intake (around week 32 of your pregnancy), we assess this together.

Most families receive between 45 and 49 hours of care, spread across 8 days after birth. This may be adjusted if needed, for example in case of medical complications or a premature birth.

Costs and health insurance

In the Netherlands, kraamzorg is included in the Basic Health Insurance. This means that if you have valid Dutch health insurance, most of the costs are already covered.

There is a small personal contribution of €5.10 per hour (co-pay or eigen bijdrage). Some insurance plans offer extra coverage that pays for this co-payment.

Not all health insurers cover it fully, so we recommend checking with your insurance company to see what’s included. Need help? We’re happy to explain or look into it with you.
